Pond Plants
During the growing season (March – August), we stock possibly the largest variety of pond plants in the north of England . We receive deliveries on a weekly basis direct from Beaver Water Plants who are one of the largest and finest growers in the U.K. of aquatic plants. This ensures that we have an ever-changing supply of fantastic fresh healthy plants, whose quality can only be appreciated by visiting our covered aquatic plant displays.
We offer a wide range of Water Lilies examples of which are shown below.
The choice of aquatic plants whilst personal and individual to each pond, may require some specialist knowledge and as such please feel free to come along and question any of our experienced staff.
Water plants are sub-divided into 5 zones
Zone 1 Pond side plants often referred to as bog or moisture loving plants, this range of plants are planted in the soil outside of the pond with their roots seeking moisture.
Zone 2/3 Marginal pond plants generally have their roots and crowns submerged in shallow water but with their leaves and flowers reaching for the sky. Some varieties of reeds, rushes and irises however will tolerate deeper water.
Zone 4 Oxygenators are extremely beneficial to the garden pond, for them to do their job properly the foliage must be submerged below water level, and preferably planted in pots to anchor them in position.
Water Lilies and Deep Water Marginals must have their crowns and roots submerged entirely allowing the stems to grow up to the light and rest their pads and flowers on the surface.
Zone 5 Floating Plants, float freely on the surface of the pond they do not need planting, but may require thinning out occasionally.
